Eventually though you get tired and there is nothing better than lounging around the campfire, telling stories and roasting marshmallows. Virtually every piece of equipment used on a camping trip is designed to be there from air mattresses and tents to sleeping bags and clothing. Chairs are no exception and camping outfitters all over the country are manufacturing some mighty comfy folding chairs.

These aren’t the folding chairs that your grandparents had.

Although metal, plastic and wood sturdy folding chairs are still manufactured for a variety of purposes, folding chairs made for camping and other activities are far more versatile, comfortable and functional. They come in single and double seat versions and are usually made of canvas over a metal frame. The frame is held together with rubberized fasteners that can flex and bend. Chairs of this design can fold into a fraction of their original size and often come with carrying bags. Larger models can come equipped with footrests and cup holders and there are even child size models, some even with popular children’s cartoon and movie personalities printed on them. Needless to say, technology and innovation have come a long way since your grandparents took folding chairs camping with them.

Knowing what to look for depends on what you need.

Folding camping chairs have been around for some time and there are dozens of manufacturers that make a variety of models. If you are interested in purchasing a chair like this it helps to know how you will be using it. Don’t get too overwhelmed though it’s just a chair. If you want to have a beer by the campfire it may be wise to purchase a model with a cup holder. The footrest models are also very convenient. As soon as the chair unfolds the footrest flops out. It is composed of one piece of canvas or whatever material the chair is made from and some metal supports, they are very effective.

For example the Gigatent camping chair sold at Toysrus comes with adjustable armrests, a footrest and a cup holder built in. It packs up to seven pounds eight ounces and has an aluminum frame. The Gigatent retails for 29.99 and is available from the retailer online only. If you are not worried about resting your feet or your drink, there are many fine camping chairs that feature all the same construction as the Gigatent but are smaller.

Coleman is a well-known name in outdoor gear and camping equipment. The company features a line of folding chairs that are a bit beefier than the average. One model in particular that does not feature the footrest is the Coleman Oversized Quad chair with cooler. It has a powder coated steel frame (whatever that means but it sure sounds fancy), padded seat and back, mesh cup holder, adjustable armrests, a 300 pound weight capacity and a three inch by eight inch by eight inch cooler that hangs off of the side. There is also a thirteen by nine inch pouch on the other side for holding magazines or whatever else you want to put in there.

Look out mom I’m going camping!

Adults shouldn’t get to have all the fun, or that’s what the camping chair industry thought. There are a variety of folding outdoor chairs made just for little ones with features like awnings to keep the sun out and sizes that ensure that they are made just for kids. A particularly useful model is the Northwest Territory Kid’s Canopy folding chair featured at Kmart online. It is of a typical camping chair design and has a padded back and a full canopy that extends up and over little Billy’s head to keep sun and rain off of your little one. It also comes with a carrying case and apparently only comes in blue.

You should be well versed in the options available for folding camping chairs. Whether you need a unit with all the basic amenities like cup holders and foot rests or something a bit simpler, you won’t run short of ideas. Keep comfy by the fire this season with a folding camping chair.
